13-YEAR-OLD STUDENT CREATES READING GLASSES WITH REAR TORCHLIGHT, A SOLAR PANEL AND USB PORTS TO CHARGE PHONES

Elijah Ephraim Umanah is a 13-year-old SS1 student of Centenary Staff College, Uyo. Elijah is so passionate about Technology that in JSS2, he and his friends formed a small group of
developers, with the aim of inventing things for the school. They would gather materials and spare parts of things from their neighborhood and try to create things or make repairs of spoilt gadgets.During one of his exams periods, Elijah faced difficulties reading for his papers at night occasioned by the faulty power supply in his area and lamps were having weak batteries because they were not charged. This drove him to try attaching a lamp to the glasses he normally wore to read, to direct the light to his books and become an alternative to reading lamps. He started work on this, but his friends had other ideas they prioritized to work on.

This brought friction between him and his friends as they would not support his idea and plans and from then on, Elijah had to work alone. He got particularly serious about bringing his ideas to limelight, that he visited the Internet on many occasions to borrow ideas about how he can make his dream work. He assembled used LED bulbs, wires, mechanical parts from old or spoilt torchlights and chargers, 1.5V batteries and started work.

He also picked a solar panel from a spoilt rechargeable lamp and consulted the Internet about how he could include it in his work, and after several failed attempts over a period of 2years, Elijah successfully brought to bear, his reading glasses with a lamp on the rear, a switch to turn ON and OFF, a solar panel to recharge the system with and quite interestingly, a USB port to charge phones though. Elijah used the Voltmeter available in his school to arrive at what power voltage he needed to have for his setup to charge phones, and switched from 1.5V batteries to 3V batteries with another 2V supplied by the Solar Panel and with this, his glasses could charge phones
effectively. His parents had doubted his creativity and, on several occasions, cut his budget so he won’t spend money getting batteries and parts as he was accustomed to doing during that period, and his father particularly flogged him a number of times when he destroyed things at home in an attempt to create his reading glasses. But these didn’t deter Elijah, who is now a pride to his parents and close neighbors over his invention.
